New #MLP Season 5 Starts TOMORROW!

So much has changed for our Mane Six friends since we last saw them! Twilight has her own castle in the center of Ponyville, and the title of Princess of Friendship. Heck, even Hub Network has changed into Discovery Family Channel now.

So, Pony-heads--Bronies and Pegasisters alike--are you ready for even more adventure in Season 5? Because I've had the opportunity to preview this weekend's first episode! No spoilers from me, but here's a quick synopsis:

The Mane Six friends learn the secret of Twilight's new castle, and are led to an eerie village in the far east of Equestria. Something is strange about the new place (can you guess what it is from the image above?)... The utilitarian "utopia" lives much like a cultish-communist commune--very Orwellian "1984"--and has a dark secret. Twilight and her friends must figure out why they are being sent there and what they must accomplish.

Strange magic is afoot here, and Twilight, Pinkie Pie, Rainbow Dash, Apple Jack, Fluttershy, and Rarity must figure out how to save the day...

... and THEMSELVES!

Be sure to tune in Saturday, April 4th at 11am ET on Discovery Family Channel (formerly Hub Network, check your local listings) to see what happens! All I can say is that it's exciting!

#HubClubBloggers - Parents Just Don't Understand and #BarkWeek!

Did you know that Hub Network is a Discovery Network? On the heels of their sister station Discovery Channel's famed Shark Week, Hub Network is airing all kinds of Dog Themed Fun for #BarkWeek! Tune in Sunday August 17th and running for the entire week, catch tons of poochy programming, featuring Animal Planet programs and Hub Family Movies starring some of your favorite pups (like Snow Buddies, Scooby-Doo, and Cats & Dogs).

Following all the Bark Week excitement, Hub prepares to air it's newest reality series, Parents Just Don't Understand hosted by former N'Sync singer Joey Fatone. Parents and kids are given the opportunity to swap lives "Freaky Friday" style for an entire day to see who really has the harder life!

Image © Hub Network

While parents are faced with foreboding tasks like sports practices and schoolwork for subjects they may not remember so well...

Images © Hub Network

... the kids are given a rude awakening of their own dealing with family obligations, caring for their siblings, running errands, and going to work!

Images © Hub Network

As a Hub Club Blogger, I was given the opportunity to preview the first two episodes of the series. The idea of the show is adorable, and what kid doesn't think their parents have the easier day? However, I think Hub is missing the mark a bit with a couple very minor things. First of all, they definitely missed an opportunity to capitalize on parent nostalgia by not featuring the famous Fresh Prince rap by the same title. That's right, no Will Smith here folks. Sorry. The other thing is that a lot of the in-between banter is obviously filmed later. Logistically, I see why they had to do it, but a lot of it feels forced. I would much rather hear more from the participants as they experience everything in their day versus them sitting in front of a green screen. Hopefully the series relaxes a bit as it continues and settles into a smoother presentation, but still I think for sure kids and parents will be given a meaningful dialog and co-viewing experience as they watch the program. Tune in to see the premiere episode "The Touchdown Maker and the Cupcake Baker" on Saturday, August 23 at 7pm Eastern/4pm Pacific. Pop over to my Facebook Page or leave a comment here telling me your family's thoughts on the new series!

Disclosure: I was provided a screener of the new series Parents Just Don't Understand as part of my membership in the Hub Club Blogger program. Views expressed are purely my own and are not in any way influenced by nor representative of Hub Network. Please see my Disclosure tab for more information.

Finally, I've been nominated for a Liebster Award! My new blogger buddy Kristen over at Ready, Set, Parenthood! nominated me! Thank you Kristen! I'd like to thank the academy.... wait, wrong nomination.

The way the award works is as follows:
1. Each person who is nominated must post 11 things about themselves.
2. You must also answer the questions that the tagger set for you in addition to creating 11 questions for the people you nominate to answer.
3. Nominate 5 – 11 of your favorite bloggers and link them in your post.
4. Go to your nominees’ pages and tell them.
5. Thank and link back to the person’s blog who nominated you.

Okay, so eleven things about myself... this ought to be interesting!

1. My eyes are two different colors. Like a husky. Well, one is all blue-gray and the other is half-blue-gray, half brown.
2. When I was an older kid (think 9, 10, 11), I wanted to race motorcycles like my dad. I wanted to be the youngest and first female street racer.
3. I have the early stages of Rhumatoid Arthritis. I don't have the titers in my blood yet, but everything else points to me having it.
4. I met TV Dad when I was just 13. I was a freshman in high school and didn't turn 14 until after the first quarter.
5. I used to speak German fluently. Now it's kind of Germanglish in my head, but I'm sure if you dropped me from a plane in Germany with nothing but my wits about me, I could survive just fine.
6. I've already done every single job I "wanted to be" as a kid... morning radio host (my senior year in college), teacher (the four years between college and having TV Boy), working in a brokerage firm (yes, I was a dorky kid, and I've done it several times), professional writer (About.com). I'm running out of dream jobs!
7. (Blank stare... this is how unexciting I am, haha!) I'm working at opening a pinball bar here in Columbus. Yes, for real! I'm aiming for a first of the year opening. Fingers crossed!
8. I've only ever lived in Columbus, Ohio. Even for college.
9. I'm an honors level Thespian in the International Thespian Society. However, the last time I did anything theatrical, I was 8 weeks pregnant. It's been a while.
10. I graduated with my bachelor's degree in three years and one quarter.
11. I've never had a roommate aside from TV Dad. Didn't live in a dorm or have a roommate in college, I lived alone my senior year.

Here are the questions Kristen gave me to answer:

  1. Why did you start your blog? Honestly, I was bored. Yep, really. And watching a lot of kids' television shows. I figured I'd put my skills to good use and review them. Then I got hired at About.com, and it blossomed from there. Now, About is gone, and here I am!
  2. What is your blog about? Kids' entertainment and geeky stuff. Because that's my life!
  3. What is your theme song? Me personally? For most of my life it was "November Rain" by Guns n' Roses, so I guess I'll stick with that because I can't think of anything better haha!
  4. What actor/actress would be cast to play you in the movie of your life? Natalie Portman, hands down.
  5. What is your most prized possession? Tough call... I still have my loveys from my childhood, they're pretty special and irreplaceable. Aside from that, I'd have to say my autographed Star Wars t-shirt with Jeremy Bulloch (Boba Fett) and Peter Mayhew (Chewbacca)'s signatures on it. Which reminds me, I need to pack that for Fandom Fest in Kentucky this weekend!
  6. If you could meet anyone, dead or alive, who would it be? Well, I already met Bill Nye (although I'd have loved to have more time with him and say something not stupid like "I'm a huge fan" repeatedly like I did... derp.) and I met Neil DeGrasse Tyson back when I taught at a STEM school and before I knew who he was (d'oh!)... I think I'd like to say Zach Braff or Chris Hardwick for now. But not because I have huge crushes on them or anything.... (whistles and walks away)
  7. What is your favorite post you have written? My Uncle Grandpa post. It was the only one that inspired actual hate mail. That was when I knew I'd made the big time!
  8. If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be? California, somewhere near or around L.A. After having been out there three times in the past year, I'd give anything to move there.
  9. If you found a magic lamp with a genie, what would be your 3 wishes? 1, The money of someone making $250K a year (don't feel like dealing with taxes higher than that). 2, a second car for TV Dad so I don't have to drive him everyday I want the car. 3, A vacation home near some body of water with free flood insurance.
  10. What is the last book you read? Uh, it was a comic book... the new Doctor Who 10 and 11 comics and the 6th issue of Serenity. If we're going actual books... Charlotte's Web with TV Boy.
  11. If you could give your 18-year old self one piece of advice, what would it be? If you really want to have a career, don't major in anything liberal arts. Also, you know that picture you think you look fat in? Yeah, you don't know jack sweetie. Enjoy your speedy metabolism and single digit pant sizes while you can!
On to the nominations! I would like to nominate the following amazing bloggers for a Liebster Award!

Tonia at WhyNotMom.com

And now I have to come up with questions for you to answer... hmm...

1. What's your favorite cartoon and why?
2. If you had a million dollars, and you *had* to spend it, what would you spend it on?
3. What famous person would you love to sit down with for an afternoon?
4. What was your favorite subject in school?
5. What was your "dream job" as a kid?
6. What is your favorite fictional book?
7. Who is your hero?
8. Why do you write/blog?
9. What is one feature you love about yourself?
10. What is your biggest pet peeve?
11. What is the coolest thing you've gotten to do for/with your blog?

Phew! Lots of work, but be sure to check out all my amazing bloggy buddies! Thanks again for the nomination Kristen!

*Stay tuned to my Instagram this weekend for shots from Fandom Fest in Kentucky! Seventh Doctor Sylvester McCoy is going to be there! Squee!*

What's The Hubbub? With Kid President! #HubClubBloggers

I've been horrible at blogging this month. I'm sorry about that. But I have some fun stuff to share with you, readers!

You may have noticed a new show on Hub Network, Kid President: Declaration of Awesome. It airs on Saturdays 7pm Eastern/4pm Pacific! I did not get to actually e-attend the hangout this time, thanks to TV Boy deciding that the sty on his eye needed to be picked off (yes, there was blood and a doctor visit involved... sigh!). However, I did get some questions asked! Check out the session with my questions below and the second half, which happened later in the day, below that.

Man is this kid just the epitome of adorable (I hope TV Boy doesn't get any ideas though, I don't know if I could handle a whole YouTube channel haha)! Be sure to tune in on Saturdays on Hub Network!

#MLPseason4 What's The Hubbub with Tara Strong and Megan McCarthy!

Last night I had THE BEST What's the Hubbub chat to date! You know I'm an old hat at these by now, so this time I got to ask the first question! However, it was not before they revealed....

That's right! Coming in 2015, My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic SEASON 5! From what I gathered during the chat, they are already in production for the new season. What they did not mention, however, was exactly when in 2015 we can expect our pony friends to return to our televisions. At the very minimum, we're waiting seven months. I guess we have Equestria Girls 2 to tide us over?

Anyway, there were SO many bloggers on the chat last night, so it's a long one, but I promise it's worth the entire watch through! Tara Strong is too adorable for words, and Megan McCarthy has her writers wit... and Ted Biaselli was wearing a Doctor Whooves shirt and TARDIS earrings. Yeah, these are my people!

 Tune in Saturday at 10am!

My Little Pony Season 4 Wrap-Up!

You all know how much I love My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. You know TV Boy is a Brony something hardcore (and you know why I think that's awesome).

What have our favorite ponies treated us to this year? Aside from epic guest stars like Weird Al Yankovic, a Pinkie Pie rap about the Wonderbolts, Fluttershy singing, and my new favorite pony of all time: Pinkie Pie's sister Maud, who is basically Daria if she were a pony. I'd say it was a banner year for my favorite of the Mane Six! (Yep, I'm a Pinkie fan... big surprise?)

Check out my recap of Season 4 on About.com and then be sure to stay tuned to the blog for my fun trip to Build-A-Bear to make a pony friend with TV Boy as well as a review of the season finale which airs on Hub Network on Saturday May 10th at 10am Eastern... yes, I've *seen* it, and--no spoilers!--you're going to be blown away! Also, there may or may not be a MLP-themed Hubbub interview coming up....... (hands in pockets, whistle whistle whistle...) All that and more coming soon here at TheTVMom.com!

"Hub Network's What's The Hubbub?" - With Spooksville's Keean Johnson and Jim Kreig

Last night I got a chance to Google Hangout with Hub Network's seires Spooksville star Keean Johnson (Adam) and Head Writer Jim Kreig! Jim is an absolutely hilarious guy, and I really kind of want to meet up with him for a drink next time I'm out in L.A. because he seems like the kind of guy who that would definitely be a night to remember! Thank goodness they muted us when we weren't asking our questions, because most of the time I was cracking up.

Image © Hub Network.

My first question comes in around the 7 minute mark, and is a call back to my October excursion to California for the Hub Halloween Bash! Check out the video below to see the entire conversation between myself, these awesome guys, Hub Network Exec Ted Biaselli and a handful of other awesome bloggers! And don't forget to tune in to Spooksville on Saturdays at 5pm Eastern/2pm Pacific on Hub Network!

UPDATE 4/8: The video now has much clearer and better audio! Check it out below!

#HubClubBloggers - Parent and Kid Review of Spooksville!

Image © Hub Network.

As part of my membership in the Hub Club Bloggers, I was given the chance to preview this weekend's episode of their popular new series, Spooksville, before it airs on Saturday March 22nd at 5pm Eastern/2pm Pacific. This review is special because it's the first video that TV Boy gets to appear in! (This kid LOVES reviewing stuff. In fact, after we finished making this video, he wanted to do a review of one of his LEGO sets.)

Image © Hub Network.

This weekend's episode is entitled "Phone Fear". Several students from the Lizzie Borden High School are taken on a "field trip" that is really a week-long survival exercise. When they get trapped in the rain, they seek shelter in an abandoned logging camp that has a scary past involving one of the earliest cellular phones in the 80's. The camp is engulfed in a mysterious fog when anyone tries to make a call. Can Adam figure out the secret of the fog and save his friends from disappearing?

Check out what TV Boy had to say about the episode in the video below, and be sure to tune in to Spooksville this weekend on Hub Network!

What's the Hubbub with Jackée Harry!

Last night, while you were watching primetime TV, I was interviewing someone who had been ON primetime TV! As part of my membership with The Hub Club Bloggers, I was invited to a video chat with Jackée Harry of television's Sister Sister and 227 fame! Jackée has won an Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series and has played numerous roles both on screen and on stage.

So, I asked you on my Facebook page if you had any questions for the shining star Jackée. Most of you seem to remember her better from her time at 227... and I'm going to admit something here. While I was indeed young during that show's run, I watched adult television with my parents, and I do not remember this show. I must have been in some weird time warp or something. I remember M*A*S*H, I remember Murphy Brown, I remember Cheers, I even remember when Steve Martin was still on Saturday Night Live. But my knowledge of this show is pretty slim and I don't know why! However, when I asked her about her catchphrase on the show, she obliged, and it kind of rings a bell. Still, like many my age, I remember her as Lisa, the mother on Sister Sister who finds out her adopted daughter has an identical twin and that they were seperated at birth.

The Hub Network has recently acquired the syndication rights to Sister Sister, and in celebration of that fact, they are having a "Tia and Tamara-thon" of back to back episodes this Friday night at 7pm Eastern.

They also are beginning a new webseries called "Hub Network's What's the Hubbub?" in which they sit down with the stars of their shows and have bloggers ask them questions, which is what I did last night on their inaugural episode! My questions for Jackée were about her time on Sister Sister, her favorite role from her time in theatre, her weight loss secrets from her time on Celebrity Fit Club, her philosophy on life, whether she liked television, movie, or theatre acting best, and more. Check out the video below and listen for my super-loud radio voice (I was in morning radio about ten years ago). Jackée was so fun to chat with!

CLUE: The Movie, Airs Tonight on Hub Network!

When I mentioned to TV Dad that I have yet to see Clue: The Movie, the conversation went something like this:

Me: "Yeah, so Clue airs tomorrow night."
Him: "Awesome."
Me: "You know, I've never actually SEEN it."
Him: (Silence, then) "I don't know you."

So, yeah. I never actually got to see the movie. It first premiered in 1985, and it wasn't my parents' cup of tea at the time, and I just... never got around to it. Same thing for Nightmare Before Christmas (GASP! Don't throw things!)

Honestly, the first Tim Curry movie I saw was Rocky Horror Picture Show... Funny story about that. My parents took me to a theatre to see RHPS. I was six (yeah, my parents were laid back, so what.) When my mom told me what we were going to see, I heard Rocky and Bullwinkle. I put on my "moose and squirrel" socks and decked my acid washed jean jacket out in my finest Rocky and Bullwinkle buttons, of which I had a rather impressive collection. The whole time, even with the live actors in front of the screen on the floor, I kept wondering where the moose was. (And don't worry, I was well asleep before the "Toucha, Toucha, Toucha" number. I was one of those kids that could sleep pretty much anywhere... and I never asked a lot of questions haha!)

I still see him in a corset.

So, I will check a movie off my bucket list tonight at 8pm Eastern/5pm Central on the Hub Network. And, they were kind enough to send me this fun little movie watching box as a treat!* Hot cocoa, Junior Mints, Popcorn (in two flavors!), Peanut M&Ms (my favorite!), and a blanket to snuggle up underneath with our treats to watch the movie, which is perfect for the O-hoth-io weather!

Let's all go to the lobby...

Also, be sure to catch an encore of Stan Lee's Mighty 7 (which they sent me a DVD version of as well) right before the movie airs at 3pm Eastern/Noon Pacific!

Stan Lee's Mighty 7 - Premieres Saturday!

I wanted to like Mighty 7. I really, really did. You all know I'm a huge geek, right? Thanks to TV Dad, that includes interest in comics (although I loved the X-Men LONG before I met him. Jean Grey FOR LIFE, YO!), and Stan Lee is THE man for comic characters. I am a serial "True Believer". I wanted to BELIEVE...

But, I'll be honest... I was disappointed. It still has potential, sure. However, Stan Lee needs to stick to bit parts and narration... he's not that good an actor. Which I guess we all knew. Still... sigh.

If you're a comic fan, you SHOULD still watch this. Then you come back here and tell me if I was way off base or not in my review of the movie. (Yes, that's a link. You should click it. No major spoilers, I promise.) The movie airs this coming Saturday, February 1st at 8pm Eastern/5pm Pacific.

Happy Halloween from TheTVMom.com!

October has been a month of incredible things here at TheTVMom.com and I am excited to get to work on some awesome new stuff for November, including video game reviews... squee!

Here is some stuff to keep you busy for the rest of this very busy week in parenting land (Halloween, plus here in Ohio, some severe weather to go with it! Should make Trick or Treating interesting!)

First of all, Hub Network is replaying the Hub Halloween Bash one more time, at 8pm Eastern on Halloween night. You have one more chance to look for me in the crowd! Now, I obviously know where I sat and I noticed myself right away a couple times (one of which was me quickly shoving a cookie back in my purse coming out of a commercial break... shows take a long time to tape and I was HUNGRY!), however, for the regular viewer, I might be tougher to spot. Check out stage left/screen right in the bleachers and look for green... that's me (I was shiny and sparkly too!) and the gal sitting next to me who was dressed as Peter Pan!

Bloggers on the purple carpet... I'm front row, second from the left!

Speaking of which, I wanted to give a special link "shout out" to all my new blog-world buddies! Please check out the following sites and tell 'em The TV Mom sent you! Be sure to like their Facebook pages and follow them on Twitter too! Spread the love!

(Note: If you're one of my blogger friends and you don't see your site listed, give me a shout! These are the ones who emailed me back and/or I followed while I was in LA. I'll get buttons up soon too for those of you who sent me one!)

Then, this Saturday, Hub Network premieres new seasons of Littlest Pet Shop and.... drumroll... MY LITTLE PONY! That's right Bronies, your pony pals are returning a little earlier than previously announced! Yes, you'll have to sit through another showing of Equestria Girls (heck, maybe you like it as much as my little Brony does lol!), but they're back baby!

Also, be sure to watch here at TheTVMom.com and on my Facebook page for a giveaway to celebrate my 2 year blog-aversary, which is coming up in a couple weeks, believe it or not! (So is my thirtieth birthday, but shhhh! We're not talking about that!)

HAPPY HALLOWEEN and bring on November!

It's Time! The Hub Network Halloween Bash is HERE!

I finally have the green light (and the time to sit down at the ol' computer desk) to tell you, dear readers, all about my exploits in L.A. with The Hub Network's First Annual Halloween Bash!

Thanks to my friends at Hub Network, they flew me out to Los Angeles last weekend (you knew that) so that I could attend the taping of the Halloween Bash.

First and foremost, we got to attend the red... er, purple... carpet arrivals. This was probably my favorite part, and you'll see why in just a second. We got to meet and chat with all the stars who were invited, presenting, hosting, and judging. Picture time!

Family Game Night host Todd Newtorn.

Khylin Rhambo who plays Dink in the new Ender's Game movie!

Kenan Thompson arriving (one of the best shots I got of him all day)

Actor Nick Purcha from the new Spooksville series.

Voice actor Jaden Betts from Doc McStuffins.

Ian Patrick from ABC's The Neighbors series.

Rico Rodriguez from Modern Family.

Nick Purcha and Keean Johnson from Spooksville.

Aubrey Anderson-Emmons (Modern Family) and Chloe Noelle (True Blood)

The only other half decent shot of Kenan Thomspon.

Singer Cody Simpson.

Judge Coco Jones.

Nolan Gould from Modern Family.

Joey King from Oz the Great and Powerful.

Judge Hal Sparks

My favorite pic of Hal Sparks! He looked right at me and made this face.

Judge Martha Stewart.

Musical Guest Fifth Harmony.

Do you see what I see??? (And what stars on the carpet saw!)

The set!
And now for the best parts of the whole day for me: The hug and thumbs up I got from THE Bill Nye The Science Guy! Ahhhh! Does my gigantic smile give you any indication as to how big of a moment this was for me??? I got to HUG BILL NYE! (Insert geek-girl squee here.)

Bill Nye hugged me!!!
Thumbs up indeed!
Oh yeah, and then there's this...

Image courtesy Getty. I don't have an account, so watermark it is.

That's me, photo-bombing Martha Stewart and Hal Sparks. I'm a dork, yes, but the fact this exists in the world makes me beyond proud. I tweeted it to Hal Sparks, but he never responded. Poo. So, Hal, if you read this, sorry you have a dorky crazy redhead over your shoulder, but I did what had to be done! Ha!

My only note for Hub next year when it comes to pulling off Bash #2: Have a kids-only category. I was kind of down to see only one kid in the final six. There were definitely some kids I think would have been up front and center had they not been up against some of these professional costumers and cosplayers. Give them a more fair shake next year and make a "cute kids" category! :)

Now for a sneak peak clip, care of Hub Network! (And yes, I think that *IS* the kid who does the break dancing on SYTYCD!)

Be sure to tune in to Hub Network TOMORROW NIGHT, Saturday, October 26 at 8pm Eastern/5pm Pacific to see what I saw! Comment with your favorite costume!

Also, don't forget to tune in earlier on Saturday for the new animated series, Sabrina: Secrets of a Teenage Witch on Hub Network!
